- Summary:
- In Malfunctioning Democracy in Japan: Quantitative Analysis in a Civil Society, Yoshiaki Kobayashi investigates the problems with democratic systems in advanced countries, using Japan as a particular case study. Kobayashi begins with a discussion of whether pledges given by political parties are ever fulfilled, which factor affect campaign pledges given by candidates at each election, and if there are discrepancies between public opinion and part policies. The following section focus on the behavior of politicians and voters, clarifying precisely which factors determine voting behavior. Then Kobayashi approaches the elections held after Japans political reform, inclusive of the 2009 lower house election that caused significant changes.
