Summary:
Appealing to students of Ottoman history and wider historical audiences interested in comparative studies on the politics of citizenship and identity, this concise volume explores the history and effects of the 1869 Ottoman citizenship law that prevented Ottoman women from marrying Iranian men, thus limiting the effects of Shi'a Islam within the empire. The work provides a brief historical discussion of the Sunni-Shi'a conflict and traces issues of citizenship, religion, and law through the late Ottoman period and into the Turkish Republic. Kern is a professor of history at Hunter College, New York. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
