Summary:
In the tradition of St. Thomas Aquinas, pagan philosopher Mortimer J. Adler (d. 2001) believed that the existence of God as creator and sustainer of the universe could be demonstrated by pure philosophical argument, without any recourse to faith. Dzugan (Center for the Study of Great Ideas) collects Adler's writing and transcripts of interviews (including an appearance in the TV show "Firing Line"), highlighting Adler's views on natural theology and his methods for proving the existence of God. An introduction reviews the main ideas of the work of Aquinas and sketches Adler's response to those ideas. Part 1 contains two essays by Adler alone and one essay by Adler with co-authors William F. Buckley and Jeff Greenfield. Part 2 contains essays and replies between Adler and theist scientist Owen Gingerich, plus essay demonstrating that Adler's ideas mesh with recent discoveries of cosmology. Part 3 offers essays from the 1940s, showing Adler's early struggles with the question of God's existence. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
