- Summary:
- "I'm just a bloody normal bloke. A normal bloke who likes a bit of torture," says Mark "Chopper" Read. Read is one of Australia's best-selling authors, in part because before he became an author, he was one of Australia's most brutal stand-over men. "Chopper" tells his story with a kind of fascinated horror, a study of the mystique of criminal notoriety, and portrait of a cunning, ruthless killer who is a legend in his own mind. In prison, Chopper is a composed, dynamic, lean survival machine. Out in the real world, Chopper is a going-to-seed paranoiac prone to uncontrollable rages. But this enigmatic criminal exudes charismatic bravado as he plays the raconteur, and the larger-than-life anti-hero he imagines himself to be. If it seems like the universe of "Chopper" Read is the wrong way round, it may be because the film does not designate a point of view from which to observe him. Celebrity, killer, or maniac--it's your call.
