Summary:
An October 2007 symposium was held at Trinity Western University in British Columbia to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the first Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran in 1947, and to discuss the current work that Canadians are doing on these texts. The 13 papers presented there have been augmented to 25 by invited papers to provide a broader look at the Canadian scholarship. After surveying Canadian scholarship and projects, they look at "biblical" scrolls and transmission of the scriptures, the Qumran community, and Qumran and Second Temple Judaism. Among the topics are patterns of scribal practice in the biblical texts from the Judean Desert with special reference to the Tejillin, the Old Greek translator of Isaiah, the historical problem of the Essenes, the motif of the eschatological battle in the War Scroll, and the development of apocalyptic historiography in light of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Four of the papers are in French. The Society of Biblical Literature publishes the paperbound edition; Brill publishes the hardbound. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
