- Summary:
- Challenging scholars' view of rodeos as a symbol of white American male dominance, Kelm (history, Simon Fraser U., British Columbia) presents a balanced examination of the sport as an inter-cultural meeting place for cowboys and other white folks and Aboriginal people, plus an arena in which women also played a role. In the chapter titled "Where the cowboys are Indians," she discusses rodeos put on by First Nations people. The book includes a map of the region discussed, illustrations from the 1910s through the 1960s, the rules of the Cowboys' Protective Association (1944), and a glossary. U.S. distribution is by U. of Washington Press; Canadian by U. of Toronto Press. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
