Summary:
The military reports collected here were written by American Army and Navy officers observing the Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s and were originally intended for a military audience. The writers of the reports were career officers with experience in others wars, especially WWI; in their reports, they comment on campaigns, leadership, weapons, and the war's effects on civilians. As a collection, the reports provide evidence of the intensity of interest in the war by the military in many countries, as they recognized that the war was a proving ground for new equipment such as aircraft and tanks. Chronological chapters cover various military campaigns and battles; there are also chapters on daily life and lessons learned from the war. The book includes a chronology and is illustrated with b&w historical photos and maps. Editor Cortada has written many historical works on Spain. The book is distributed in the US by Books International Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
