Summary:
Bowler (political science, U. of California, Riverside) and Segura (American politics and Chicano studies, Stanford U.) examine the political behavior of minorities, paying special attention to the way that demographics have affected, and will continue to affect the two-party system. One of their over-arching theses is that given the disproportionate support non-white minorities give to Democrats, that as African Americans, Asians and Hispanics grow so will Democratic dominance in elections. To make this case they look at voter data from political and social studies, considering values and beliefs different minority groups have about government and social welfare. They also consider inter-group conflict and cooperation, minority representation in government, and the dynamics of demographic change. This text is appropriate for a class-room setting and includes many informative tables, maps and module-like chapters with online versions available for download.
