- Summary:
- Bush (English, Saint Louis U.) collects 42 excerpts from recollections, interviews, and memoirs about Abraham Lincoln as a thinker, reader, writer, and speaker. The sources of the excerpts are Lincoln and his family, friends, colleagues, and famous figures such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Frederick Douglass, Mark Twain, William Jennings Bryan, Booker T. Washington, and Theodore Roosevelt. He aims to illustrate the development of Lincoln's thinking and perceptions about it, and present important contemporary thoughts on Lincoln about his legacy and cultural significance. They address Lincoln as an author, including his use of literature and other writings and their influence on him; the rise and emergence of his image as a martyred president; and how his contemporaries understood him as a religious thinker and sacred symbol. Ending around the centennial of his birth and the beginning of World War I, entries include the historical and cultural context and endnotes about people and places. Bush also introduces Lincoln's life and provides a chronology. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
