Summary:

Lynch (classics, U. of Cincinnati, Ohio) has expanded and shifted focus in the study since 1999 when it served as her dissertation for the University of Virginia. In 1993, she recounts, a house was excavated, and the next year a well--a familiar closed deposit--was found, and had been emptied by the third year. She contextualizes the material from that deposit, situating artifacts in their temporal, spatial, and/or cultural environment in order to understand better their association with other artifacts and cultural activities. She covers the archaeological context, the household assemblage, drinking vessels, service vessels, and household activities other than the symposium. A catalog of artifacts follows her text.
