- Summary:
- The lite of Sir William Reardon Smith embodies the rags to riches ideal - born to mid-nineteenth century poverty on the north Devon coast, drawn to an early life at sea that quickly saw him becoming a master mariner and, eventually, firmly established as a powerful shipowner in Cardiff, before the baronetcy and philanthropy of his later life. Among the beneficiaries during his lifetime were the Reardon Smith Nautical School, Cardiff Royal Infirmary and, of course, the National Museum of Wales that today boasts the famous Reardon Smith Theatre.
