- Summary:
- This interesting history of the literary traditions of the Rio de la Plata region of South America during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries explores the effects of early introduction of ubiquitous print culture on colonial and post colonial societies and examines the ways in which wide spread literacy moderates the effects of upheaval on vulnerable populations. The work discusses the effects of informal and formal education and general literacy on a wide range of political events that affected the region during a period of revolution and conflict. Acree is a professor of Spanish at Washington University, St. Louis. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
