Bek-Pedersen (she holds a PhD in Scandinavian studies from U. of Edinburgh, Scotland) has written a detailed history of the intriguing magical women, often described in Old Norse mythology, who were called the nornin, or norns. Quoting from a wealth of original sources in Old Norse, with English translation also provided, she conveys the powers and stories associated with the norns, discussing the interpretation of the figures by later scholars, and the origins of the terms used to describe them.
