- Summary:
- Willatzen (product innovation, U. of Southern Denmark) and Lew Van Voon (physics, Wright State U., Ohio) explain how to solve boundary-value problems in physics using the method of separation of variables, going beyond the few simple coordinate systems described in most other textbooks. They present an applications-oriented approach to the general theory of the separation of variables, and illustrate different aspects of it with a variety of separable orthogonal coordinate systems. They also consider a range of special functions that can result, though they make clear this is not a text on special functions. The fundamental material is suitable for a one-semester course in partial differential equations at the graduate or senior level; the rest of the material can be used as self-study or more advanced courses.
