There were two different endings to "The House of Connelly". The script Green sent to the Theatre Guild in 1928 contained a tragic ending but leaders of the Guild wrote arguing that a hopeful ending was better for the play. Green then wrote a hopeful ending and this was the version used in the inaugural production of the Group Theatre opening in New York on 28 December 1931 and then published in 1931 and 1939. The original tragic ending was published in "Five Plays of the South," edited by John Gassner and published by Hill and Wang in 1963.--Cf. A Southern Life.
