Summary:
To understand Canada's history within the British Empire, award-winning author Jonathan F. Vance looks to the military past of both nations. The fabric of Canadian life in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries owes a great deal to the presence of the British in military garrisons. And this, observes Vance, is a two-way relationship: he reminds us that during the two world wars, close to a million Canadians travelled to the United Kingdom. In this curious form of reverse colonialism, Canadians established modest outposts in Britain, and parts of the country were Canadianized. This outside-the-box narrative, weaving first-hand accounts across the home front and front lines, is Jonathan F. Vance at his best. Combining original research with Vance's unique perspective, Maple Leaf Empire captures the absorbing story of a young nation in the making. Reproductions of personal letters, family photographs, and wartime posters in full colour offer a window into these formative years in Canadian history. The culmination is a vivid portrait of Canada brought to life for today's readers. Book jacket.
