Summary:
In this ethnographic study of poor women residing in the slums of Salvador, Brazil, Brown (sociology, U. of Witwatersrand, South Africa) highlights the central role of the telenovelas (akin to soap operas) in the informal survivalism of the slums. She examines the ways in which the women viewers of the telenovelas utilize them as symbolic resources for reconstructing their bodies, largely devalued by the wider society and its institutions, even if such symbolic agency is not necessarily deployed in critique of social exclusion and inequality.
