Summary:
Swedish clergyman and politician Anders Chydenius (1729-1803) has been called "Scandinavia's Adam Smith" for his writings on a wide range of political and economic matters and for his embrace of (classical) liberalism, but his work has heretofore remained untranslated and unavailable to non-Swedish readers. This volume makes available 11 key writings of Chydenius in English for the first time. Thematically, they address such topics as freedom of trade and industry, emigration, the monetary system of Sweden, freedom of the press, freedom of information, the rights of the rural working class, and freedom of religion. Each selection is accompanied by commentary and explanatory notes and the editors also include a comprehensive biography of Chydenius written by Lars Magnusson (economic history, Uppsala U., Sweden).
