Summary:
Drawing on Dutch archival records and primary and secondary sources in multiple languages, Meuwese (history, U. of Winnipeg, Canada) takes a broad Atlantic perspective (rather than a more conventional regional perspective) to examine interactions between the Dutch and indigenous peoples--interactions that made possible the ensuing Dutch expansion. The study is meant to encourage research "...on a rich topic that is often neglected due to language barriers and because of the misinformed idea that the Dutch did not establish extensive relations with non-European peoples in comparison with other European colonial powers" (from the preface).
