Summary:
Picard (Technical U. Dresden, Germany) and McGhee (Strathclyde U., Glasgow, Scotland) have combined notes for introductory and advanced graduate courses on partial differential equations and functional analysis. The proofs are given in more detail than one might normally expect in a monograph, but though it may slow readers somewhat, it also makes the book useful as a text for a reading course or for self-study. They cover elements of Hilbert space theory, Sobolev lattices, linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients, linear evolution equations, some evolution equations of mathematical physics, a royal road to initial boundary value problems.
