"No work of mine has been so long in process of creation as this play. The theme came to me in 1914, and was at that time jotted down in my note-books ... In 1919 I tried to write it and failed ... In 1923, I tried a second time, and failed once more ... Finally in 1925, after I had written another drama, I solved the problem of presentation and wrote my play entire ... I set the manuscript aside, and revised it in 1927, and again in 1929."--Note.
