The play was composed by Wilmot and gentlemen of the Inner Temple, and presented by them before the Queen in 1568. It was printed in 1591, "newly revised and polished" by Wilmot, under the title "Tragedie of Tancred and Gismund." From the initials he gives at the end of each act, it appears that act II was by Henry Noel, act IV by Christopher Hatton, and act V by Wilmot; the authors of act I (Rod. Staf.) and act III (G. Al.) have not yet been identified. cf. Cambridge hist. of Eng. lit., v. 5, p. 81-85, and Dict. nat. biog.
