Summary:
Most histories of Gaels and Highlanders end with land reform in the years just before or after World War I, says Burnett (history, Edinburgh Napier U.), but he contends that the significant shift from old to new happened some decades later. It was during World War II and the two decades following, he says, that residents of the region witnessed and engaged with the final onslaught on the much-lauded but elusive traditional way of life in the Highlands and Islands. He discusses image and reality of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland 1745-1939, governing the Highlands 1939-65, and voices within and laments from below. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
