Summary:
This collection of essays from mostly culture and gender studies scholars at an Irish Masculinities conference in Belfast, takes a look at past and current perceptions of Irish masculinity and serves to deconstruct those notions as represented in literature and culture. From women being granted equal suffrage and joining the male-led fascist Blueshirt organization in 1933 to modern-day Belfast drag queens that brought the transsexual musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the archetypal Irish male is stripped down and exposed, emotionally, historically and psychologically. Myths, gender identification and relationships, as well as literary references are addressed. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
