- Summary:
- Maryks (history, City U. of New York-Bronx Community College) presents a critical edition of the petitions in their original Italian language that Catholic Jews residing in Italy submitted to the Fascist General Administration for Demography and Race in order either to be discriminated--that is, not subjected to various provisions of Mussolini's racial laws of 1938--or to be Aryanized--be considered not of the Jewish race as defined by the convoluted and inconsistent Fascist anti-Semitic legislation. Most of the petitioners had always been Catholic, but had ancestors who were Jewish. All the documents are from the private archive of Venturi (1861-1956), a controversial key figure in church-state relations during the entire period of the Fascist regime 1922-43. Biographical sketches in English are included. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
