- Summary:
- The college was founded, says Chou (history, Lingnan U., Hong Kong) with the goal of representing, rejuvenating, promoting, and sustaining Chinese culture in the British colony while China was undergoing a phase of radical rejection of Chinese culture under the recently triumphant Communist government. She traces the history of the institution from its founding until it became Chinese University in 1963. The stages of the tale are constructing cultural education around Chinese identity in exile; the investment of American non-governmental organizations in containing communism and promoting culture; colonial policy and cultural evaluation; and negotiating a Chinese University with symbols, standards, and content.
