- Summary:
- Altertnative and community journalism is a unique set of practices which has a long history in the mechanism of democracy in one sense alternative and community journalism is attempting to fill the gaps left by mainstream new outlets in another sense, it is a discrete process which is dedicated to seeking truth and, in these sense endeavours, sometimes pays little attention to the content of its mainstream counterparts. In light of this, What do we really know about alternative and community journalism? Where do the news ideas come from and how are editorial decisions made? What is the motivational and how does this influence reporting? And in assessing this form should our focus be on content, or process?
- Challenging the News examines the nature of alternative and community media outlets, focusing on the news structures and journalistic practices at work. By theorizing alternative journalism as a set of practices unique to its practitioners- and consistent across time despite changing technology and shifting environments -Forde provides original evidence via interviews with journalists, and examines journalistic content to support her key arguments about the motivation of alternative journalists to enhance democracy and public life.
- Forde's extensive study develops an understanding of the journalistic practices at work in independent and community news organizations in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, and practice based examples of what it is alternative journalists do....Drawing on original text research into a range of alternative and community media, this original texts offers a unique insight into journalistic practices motivations.
