Summary:
This volume documents the life and work of Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields (1863-1932), who established the Fields Medal for outstanding mathematics discoveries in 1932. It relates his childhood in Hamilton, Canada West, and its scientific culture, his education at the U. of Toronto and Johns Hopkins U., his post-doctoral years in Europe, his return to the U. of Toronto and his research there, the International Mathematical Congress in Toronto in 1924, and the international context of the field of mathematics before 1914. The two world wars ended the international cooperation in the sciences, which he reestablished after the wars with the Fields Medal. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
