Summary:
Irwin is 80-plus years old and is an esteemed and extraordinarily prolific artist who is also extraordinarily articulate. He claims that his writings have never been intended primarily for communication, but rather for exploration, and yet they communicate remarkably well about subjects of primary interest to artists working in any medium. Editor Simms (art, California State U., Long Beach) identifies three categories of writings collected here: interviews, documents, and essays--more than one-third of which are unpublished manuscripts that Simms found among the Robert Irwin Papers at the Getty Research Institute.
