Summary:
Glezos (political science, U. of Regina) develops an analysis of speed and acceleration in modern life, and applies that to an exploration of how we may "constructively engage with the phenomenon of speed, and technological acceleration, in ways that promote democratic governance, pluralistic social formations, egalitarian economic structures, and reduce violence and suffering." He submits technology to political analysis to widen what we consider materiality, not to say that value-neutral material analyses of technology are moot. Specific topics include: speed and the transformation of liberal democracy, the acceleration of warfare, the tension between speed and restraint in capitalism, and how acceleration and globalism lead to more stratification not homogenization. Finally he considers the way that speed and acceleration work in the favor of "the development of extensive networks of global activism and mutual aid."
