- Summary:
- Sorensen (political science, U. of Aarhus, Denmark) notes that most of the 1990s was a "honeymoon period" for liberal thinking in international affairs and liberal politics--the Cold War had ended in a liberal victory and that triggered visions of sustained liberal democracy, international institutions, the world economy, and values. But in 10 years or less, it became clear that liberal progress was possible in theory but that its foundations were far less solid than most people thought. In his book, he discusses why he remains skeptical that such liberal progress is a relatively simple matter. He contends that such progress is not simply the result of developing good policies, and that deep tensions in liberal principles themselves need to be successfully dealt with.
