Summary:
In 2006, eight scholars formed a research team to investigate different aspects of magical texts and practices in the various pagan, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim cultures of the ancient and medieval world. Part of the project was a conference in July of that year, to which they invited another 11 scholars. The 14 papers that made it to publication here discuss such topics as the revision of Babylonian anti-witchcraft incantations as seen in the ceremonial series Maqlu, scribal practices in the production of magic handbooks in Egypt, two Apolline oracles on magic, two case studies of magic and medicine in the Roman imperial period, Jewish Babylonian Aramaic bowls as a case of the transmission and transformation of spells, and a dream inquiry text from the Cairo Genizah.
