Biography/History:

German scholar of classical philology who completed his degree at the University of Göttingen in 1830, and subsequently taught there, beginning as a lecturer in 1831, and becoming a full professor in 1842.

Summary:

Ernst von Leutsch's handwritten notes for lectures he gave on Cicero's De oratore, at the University of Göttingen, compiled over a period of time, with the earliest, neatly written notes probably dating from the beginning of his teaching career. The latest date in the bibliographical references in the early notes seems to be 1830; and Leutsch once refers to an 1830 edition of the text as having been recently published (kürzlich, 1830). Additional marginal notes contain dates as late as 1836. The second half of the manuscript appears to comprise a different, later version of the lectures, with sporadic references dated as late as 1847, and perhaps only one later than that, dated 1872. Included at the beginning are opening remarks for the course (Meine Herren). The first half of the manuscript includes an introduction that discusses the history of Roman rhetoric; the time of writing; the life of Cicero; the title of the work; and the composition. There follows an annotated glossary or commentary on the text, marked with running section numbers 1 to 108. The second part of the manuscript contains briefer introductory material, with headings referring to the circumstances of the writing (äussere Geschichte der Bücher Cicero's Vom Redner); Cicero's status or situation in Rome at the time of the writing; and the composition. There follows another annotated glossary or commentary (Erklärende Anmerkungen), referring at the beginning to Book 1, and marked with running section numbers 1 to 48.
