- Summary:
- Patterson (government, Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, & World Affairs) notes that in the aftermath of 9/11 government officials, pundits, and others announced "It has nothing to do with religion." That belief, the author contends, underscores a willingness to ignore the religious ideas and identities of most societies in Western foreign policy--and it could lead to severe consequences. Also, that aversion among Western leaders, he says, ignores the positive contributions among religious people and groups, a way of thinking that fails to take into account the opportunities for possible allies. He discusses topics such as the failings of secularist foreign policy approaches, new opportunities for liberalism and realism, and enhancing US foreign policy with religious literacy.
