Summary:
Bull (art history, Oxford U.) presents a re-assessment of Nietzsche that argues that his work represents an intervention in the growing nihilism of the Western world. He does this by appealing to Nietzsche's interest in sense and aesthetics. In a world that has lost all its old values, boundaries that defined the limits of imagination and desire are likewise erased, and a new ocean of possibilities opens itself up. Here, philistinism has a home. When things outside of this world are no longer our reference for our values, no longer decide how we value, than the things of this world do and in that way Bull thinks Nietzsche's project of a "revaluation of all values" underpins an ecological perspective. In the end, he combines Nietzsche's insight into herd morality and egalitarianism with Gramsci's observations about the passive dynamics of revolution, and makes the case for a permanent nihilistic revolution.
