- Summary:
- As a young, African American journalist working around the country in the 1980s-2000s, author Amy Alexander often came in conflict with the white-male dominated news and media industry. Here, she argues that newsroom diversity has become even less of a priority than in the past; the modern newsroom's disconnect from today's younger media consumers and more ethnically diverse communities, she says, is a major factor in the death of the standard print and TV news media. She describes milestones in her career set against changes in the nation's demographics and analyzes the media's treatment of major race-related news stories of the past 30 years, such as the Rodney King riots, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the election of Barack Obama. Alexander is a former fellow of the Nation Institute. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
