Summary:
Ernst von Leutsch's handwritten notes for lectures he gave on the poetry of Pindar. The manuscript consists of individual gatherings, and inserted leaves, evidently compiled over time, and the original, or intended order is uncertain. In a review of the scholarly literature on Pindar, citations found in notes that would appear to belong to an early version of the lectures are dated as late as 1859; other leaves that could have been inserted later on include citations in the 1860s; and on one inserted leaf of notes in which Leutsch's handwriting resembles that of a later period, the date 1873 is cited. A little more than a third of the manuscript addresses more general topics including the development of Greek lyric poetry up until the time of Pindar and his poetry in general, with sections devoted in particular to the background of the victory odes (Siegesgesänge; Epinikien), and the history of the Olympic games. Roughly another third of the manuscript comprises a commentary on the Olympian odes, including section headings referring to odes I to VII, X, XII, and XIV. Finally, a third or less of the manuscript includes commentaries on various other poetry of Pindar, including especially the Pythian odes (I, VI, VII), Nemean odes (I to V, IX), and Isthmian odes (I and II), as well as other works (Paean fr. I; Hymn fr. I; Dithyrambi fr. I to III; Prosod. fr. I).
