Summary:
Ernst von Leutsch's handwritten notes for lectures he gave on the Birds of Aristophanes. The manuscript begins with a brief introduction (13 leaves) and otherwise consists entirely of a detailed commentary on the play with running references apparently to verse numbers, 1 to 1748. The introduction concerns the elements of comedy in general; the era of the performance of the play, with a the history of the year in which it was first performed; and the content and characters. As in all his manuscript lecture notes, Leutsch divides his pages into two columns, writing mainly in the column on the inner margin, and reserving the outer column for additional notes or references. The manuscript seems to contain one earliest set of notes, and then at least one or two additional layers of notes consistently inserted throughout, plus numerous miscellaneous leaves. The many references in the notes are predominantly to other classical texts rather than to the scholarly literature; a handful of dates in the 1840s could be found cited, the latest 1844, in a marginal note that may not belong to the oldest layer of the notes. Included is a printed item found with the manuscript, the last few printed pages from a declaration by the theological faculty of Göttingen published in 1854 (Erklärung der theologischen Facultat zu Gottingen).
