- Summary:
- Jeremy Taylor (1613-70) lived in turbulent times in which the English Civil War, the Commonwealth years and the Restoration formed a dramatic backdrop. As a gifted young - preacher in his early twenties, he became a favourite of William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury, and King Charles I who made him his chaplain, yet his fortunes rose, fell and rose again with the ever-shifting political landscape;. He was to lost his career in the Church and suffer imprisonment three times for his views. At the Restoration, he was made Bishop of Down and Connor, and Vice-Chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin.
- It was an age of polarized religious views that called for a characteristically generous Anglican spirit. Moral excess and repression were in turn the order of the day and Taylor refused to avoid difficult questions. He could write about intimate and controversial pastoral issues with courage, compassion and practical wisdom. These qualities gave Jeremy Taylor a distinctive theological voice and made him a: bestselling devotional author in his own lifetime. Centuries later, his devotional works stand as classics of Anglican spirituality, through which his influence and personality resound still. Book jacket.
