- Summary:
- There has been much study of academic condemnation, says Larsen (history, U. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette U.), but it has been focused largely on the propositions condemned and how both the proposition and the condemnation impacted the course of intellectual history. His concern here, by contrast, is with the mechanics of condemnation, such as who initiated and who oversaw it, whether there was any legal force to it, how it affected the man whose ideas were targeted, and what other factors were involved. Another innovation of his study is the concentrated focus on a single university; he surveys in detail all known cases of condemnation at Oxford during the period.
