Summary:
The vice president of the Susan Glaspell Society bemoans that the award-winning playwright/author (1876-1948) is "timidly acknowledged as the mother of modern American drama" as a founder of the innovative Providencetown Players (which moved to New York City from Mass.)--which launched her career and Eugene O'Neill's--rather than as a peer of master playwrights. In critical readings of her plays written from 1915-1943, Hernando-Real (English and North American literature, U. Complutense de Madrid, Spain), examines her themes of women escaping home in the search for a space of their own, invasion of one's space and other geopathology. The book features lines from and scenes from "little theater" productions of plays including Chains of Dew, Suppressed Desires, and The Verge.
