- Summary:
- Drawing on Sources as varied as archaeological findings and recent studies of migration issues and drug violence, this fascinating history ranges from Mayan and Aztec society-and their brutal defeat at the hands of the conquistadors- to the present day William H. Beezley sheds light on such topics as the three-hundred-year colonial rule of Spain, during which Mexico became a multicultural society marked by Roman Catholicism and the Spanish language. The author describes Mexican independence from Spain, showing how it was marred by internecine battles and foreign invasions-most notably the devastating U.S. occupation and seizure of half its territory in the mid-nineteenth century. Bee/icy shows how the government turned to foreign models of development and investment, a push for economic growth that largely benefitted the social elites and ignored the population in the countryside, especially the Indians. Decades of such neglect led to the 1910 revolution, the world's first social revolution-which achieved land, educational, and public health reforms, but slowly turned to authoritarian rule and ultimately marginalized rural, indigenous, and poor Mexicans. Beezlev brings this history up to the twenty-first century, with Mexico entering a new era of more democratic: politics while facing the severe challenges of international migration, drug cartels, and ruinous economic policies.
