Summary:
The 2003 edition evolved from a Canadian Child Welfare Research and Policy Symposium. Kufeldt (sociology, U. of New Brunswick) and McKenzie (social work, U. of Manitoba) introduce new research and some international perspectives on child welfare. Following chapters on the historical and legal context of child welfare in Canada, contributors review research on the rising incidence of and differential response systems to reported child abuse and neglect, efforts to increase support to families to promote resilience, and options in the continuum of care. Case studies newly treat bi-cultural issues in responding to indigenous peoples' needs. Recommendations for improving research, policy, and practice in child welfare conclude the volume.
