Summary:
In Ourense Spain, trainee priest Salvador returns from the war in 1940, with some of his beliefs in tatters. He returns to the seminary, working as a teacher. One of his pupils is Lorenzo, whose father Ricardo, a fervent Republican, has gone into hiding in the family home aided by his wife Elena. Believing Elena to be a widow, Salvador clumsily begins to woo her, while puzzling over the contradictory remarks Lorenzo constantly makes. Lorenzo's older sister Elenita is pregnant, and she and her republican boyfriend Lalo attempt to run away and find freedom in Portugal. Salvador brings his suspicions to the attention of the rector, as Lorenzo, unable to lie successfully, is stripped of his innocence--and his father--by a war that he does not understand.
