Summary:
Partially based on the author's PhD dissertation, this book is an anthropologist's account of her extraordinary relationship with an extraordinary indigenous woman in Ecuador. Rosa Lema's long life has intersected with dramatic changes in the cultural context and world connections of her people, the Otavalen, and Lema has made the best of the opportunities that cross-cultural exchanges have offered--even visiting New York City in 1949. D'Amico offers this ethnography, which intertwines her experiences with Lema; those of a previous ethnographer, Elsie Clews Parsons--who knew Lema several decades earlier; and broader considerations of the cultural construction of place and transcultural identities in local and global marketplaces. B&w and color photos support the text. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
