Summary:
Lopez (English and Chicana/o studies, U. of California at Los Angeles) argues that Chicana/o literature has evidenced postnationalism or transnationalism at its core since the turn of the 19th century and the collapse of the Spanish empire; a postnationalism that has posited an American hemispheric imaginary of space, place, and identity that offers "the possibility of transcending the racial inconsistencies of the empirical nation-state." The argument thereby places the origins of Chicana/o post/transnationalism in a wider context than scholars who have previously found its roots in the conquest of the US Southwest from Mexico and the imagined space of Aztlan promoted by the Chicana/o identity movements of the 1960s and 1970s.
