- Sociologist Elias (1897-1990) first published the nine essays on human symbol making in 1989 as three installations in the journal Theory, Culture and Society. The essays were posthumously collected into a single volume and published under the current title in 1991 by Sage, London. Among the topics are languages as learned sound patterns and symbols as the fifth dimension, the high survival value of communication by learning sound-symbols, and human society as a level of nature beyond idealism and materialism.
