- Summary:
- Examining the first five years of Polish membership in the European Union, Szczerbiak (contemporary European studies, U. of Sussex, England) considers the impact that the inclusion of Poland has had on the EU and on Polish public attitudes towards the EU and Polish domestic politics. He describes the major role that Poland played in the efforts to draft an EU constitution in the run up to the Lisbon Treaty and the efforts of Poland to promote an "Eastern dimension." He also examines the influence of Euroskepticism on Polish domestic party and electoral politics, finding no evidence for a "Eurosceptic backlash" even though the issue had the potential to be a realigning issue. The discussion also seeks to make broader theoretical contributions to the questions of how countries effectively pursue their interests within the EU and how the European integration process impacts or fails to impact the domestic politics of member states.
