Summary:

Edkins (international politics, Aberystwyth U., Wales) sees a contrast between the ways governments react to cases of missing people versus the demands of their families and loved ones. Whereas, for the government, people are mere objects of governance, families insist on recognizing the person-as-such. Implicit in this latter understanding of personhood, she argues, is a challenge to standard systems of governance and objectification. She explores the varied ways in which this conflict emerges between governments and people in a range of cases, including: among displaced peoples following World War II, the search for victims of the London bombings of 2005 and the collapse of the World Trade Center in 2001, and the Mothers of the Disappeared movement in Argentina.
