- Summary:
- Translator Yi Yang (comparative literature, U. of California, Riverside) provides an introduction to this two-volume work briefly describing the histories of histories--of Chinese literature in English, and of Chinese literature in Chinese. Yuming's work was published in 2005, in Chinese, and the current translation is one of only a few translations of such works from Chinese into English. Yuming is affiliated with China's Fudan University, and this English translation is a co-publication of Fudan U. Press and Brill. He offers a preface explaining the genesis of the work and its scope. Coverage begins with culture in the Shang and Zhou period, ancient mythology, and early works. The final chapters deal with drama, fiction, poetry, and prose of the Qing Dynasty.
